Getting Holiday and Seasonal Decorations Out of Storage

With October now almost half over, you might be thinking about getting your fall and winter holiday decorations out of storage and put up around the house. As you’re getting decorations out of storage from your garage, basement, or attic this fall, it’s important to check everything to see if it’s in good condition, and in the case of decorative lights, that they work as they should. Check Holiday Decor for Damage

Before you start hanging cobwebs and putting fake pumpkins and leaves around the house, take the time to check each piece for damage. Ceramic and plastic decor can become chipped or broken if they weren’t packed properly, and you don’t want to put up damaged decorations. If something can be repaired with a bit of tape or super glue, then you can likely make it look good enough for another season or two. However, if something is badly damaged or beyond repair, it’s better to dispose of it safely and replace it with a new piece of decor!

Once fall and winter are over, and you’re packing up your decor once again, take the time to wrap each fragile item in bubble wrap or packing paper. You’ll also want to make sure that the heavier items are on the bottom of the box or tub so they don’t break or crush any lighter items. Proper packing techniques can save your decor from damage and keep them in great condition for many years to come!

Check Holiday & Christmas Lights for Functionality

Whether you have orange lights for Halloween and the fall season, or you use the same multi-colored lights for every winter holiday season, it’s imperative to check any lights and other electrical decor for proper functionality. If a bulb is out, it could affect the entire string, rendering the lights useless. Some holiday lights have bulbs that can be replaced, but if you don’t have any replacement bulbs, it could be easier just to replace the old string of lights entirely.

When packing your holiday lights at the end of the year, take the time to wrap them properly so they don’t get tangled. Your local hardware or home goods store likely has spools made specifically for holiday lights, and once you’ve wrapped the lights around the spool, store them in a sturdy plastic bin and put them in your storage unit until next year!

Take Inventory of Your Holiday Decor

This step can be completed either when you’re taking your decorations out of storage or when you’re putting things away at the end of the season, but it can be beneficial to take inventory of your decor each year. There might be some favorites that you put on display every year, along with family heirlooms such as an ornament or a seasonal figure. You know you’ll keep these items forever, but what about those plastic pumpkins you bought several years ago that are starting to look a bit dated?

Taking stock of your decor can help you keep everything at a manageable level, and as things begin to look dated or become damaged, you can toss or donate these items and store everything else.
