Getting Rid of Household Items During the Fall

Furniture packed in the back of an SUV or van, tied down with bunjie cables for a move

While many people give their house a deep cleaning during the spring, fall can also be a good time to get rid of household items that you no longer want or need. You’re going to be spending more time indoors over the next few months, and the last thing you want is to live with clutter. At EZ Storage®, we can help you find a self-storage unit in Philadelphia that can protect those belongings that you want to keep, but don’t necessarily want to keep in the house.

Purging certain items can help you enjoy your home in ways you never have before. Perhaps there are things sitting in the back of a cabinet that you haven’t used in years, or maybe there’s a few pieces of furniture that could be sold or given away. Whatever the case may be, it can be worth it to go through the house and see what you can get rid of!

Clean Out the Cabinets

Cabinets offer great storage space inside your home, but they can also become catch-alls for random objects. For example, your kitchen cabinets might have dishes and cookware that you haven’t seen or used in a long time, but those items are still taking up space. If you have things such as glassware or china that were handed down from your parents or grandparents, then consider boxing them up and putting them in storage, rather than letting them gather dust at the back of a cabinet. This can keep them safe for future generations!

Household cleaners are also often in cabinets and cupboards, especially under the sink in your kitchen or bathroom. Some of the bottles may have been in there for years and are no longer good for cleaning. Others may be mostly empty, but you just haven’t gotten around to throwing them away. Before you toss them in the trash can, however, make sure that they can go in the garbage. Some household cleaners may have to be disposed of in safer, more environmentally responsible ways.

Assess Your Furniture

Everyone goes through stages of using different furniture in their home. You might sit in a certain chair for awhile, and then switch to using the couch more often. When it comes to your bedroom, you may decide that you want a new bed frame after a few years, on top of buying a new mattress. When assessing your furniture, it can be good to think about what could function well in another room, as well as what you could sell or give away to someone who needs a new chair or couch.

Going room by room can help you decide what furniture to keep, what can be moved, and what could possibly be stored, donated, or sold. Maybe there’s a chair in the living room that would look great in your home office. If so, then move it there for a few weeks to see how it feels. If you’re going to be buying new furniture soon, then start moving some pieces into storage or post them online to see if you can find interested buyers!

Go Through Your Collections

Lots of people collect things, and these collections range from vinyl records and comic books to baseball cards and stamps. As you’re going through things this fall, take some time to sort through your collections. It can be fun, on a chilly fall evening, to sit on the floor and go through your record or comic book collection.

There are likely some items in your collection that you could sell for a few bucks, and on top of making some money, you’re also creating more space in your house. If you have rare collectibles that are increasing in value, then consider putting those into self-storage for safekeeping. We offer climate-controlled options that are perfect for vinyl, paper, and other fragile materials.
