Going Through Your Storage Unit
While the chilly month of January might not be the best time to go through your self-storage unit, it can be a good idea to sort through the belongings you have in storage before the year gets too old and you run out of new-year motivation. At EZ Storage® in Pittsburgh, we love helping people find the best solutions for their items, and if you’ve rented a unit with us, then we thank you for your loyalty. If, as you’re going through your current unit, you decide that you need a bigger or smaller space, then we’ll gladly help you find the right option!
Make a Weekend of It
It’s likely going to take you more than one day to go through your storage unit, even if you have a small space. There will be plenty of boxes and tubs to move and open, and you should count on it taking at least two days to cover the entire unit. Making a weekend of it can often be the best choice, or you can dedicate a few evenings during the week to taking inventory of what’s in the unit.
Take Inventory
Speaking of taking inventory, it’s a good idea to see what you have in storage before you begin moving things out or throwing items away. Hopefully you labeled everything properly so that you can simply look at a box to know what’s inside. If you’re looking for a specific object, then you can open the right box the first time, instead of opening three or four boxes in an attempt to locate the item.
Bring More Boxes and Tubs
As you’re sorting through belongings, you might find a few items that you want to take home. It’s easy enough if it’s an entire box of items, but if it’s a few small things here and there, then you’ll want something in which to carry them home. An extra box can help with this, and will also help you stay organized.
You can also use the extra boxes and tubs to sort things into different categories, such as donations, home, and giveaway. As you separate belongings, you might find that certain items jump from box to box, only to end up back in the storage unit. Be decisive about what you want to keep and what you want to donate or give away — it can make life much less stressful!
Have Someone Help You
Another way to stay motivated about going through your storage unit is to have someone help you. If you have a friend or relative who loves organizing and isn’t shy about making decisions, then they could be the perfect person to assist you. Not only will you have an extra pair of hands to help with the lifting and moving of boxes, you’ll also have someone who can help you decide what’s worth keeping and whether or not it’s time to part with a certain item.
