At EZ Storage® in Detroit, we know that you may have some valuable items that you want to keep safe by putting them into self-storage. You know how much these things, such as family heirlooms and antiques, are worth, and you want to make sure they’re protected at all times. What you may not know, however, is that you might own other items that are worth quite a bit, but that are simply sitting in a box in your storage unit. It can be beneficial to go through some of these boxes and see what items could be valuable, and should you want to, you could sell them for some extra cash!
Collectibles and Memorabilia
If you’re a collector of any kind, then you probably have a fairly good idea of what your collectibles are worth. Everything from pop culture memorabilia to comic books can be worth some money, but it may have been several years since you last assessed your collection. There could be some rare items or unique pieces that you’d forgotten you had, and it can be a nice surprise to come across them again while going through your storage unit.
For many serious collectors, they have a system of cataloguing and keeping an inventory of their collections. If you’ve never done this, it can be a great way to know exactly what you have, how many of each item you have, and what each piece potentially could be worth. Should you ever need to sell some items, you’ll know exactly where they are, what condition they’re in, and what their current value is.
Artwork and Antiques
With any collection of artwork or antiques, age and condition both play major roles. If you own an original painting or photograph from a famous artist, then it’s likely easy to know that you could sell it for quite a bit. However, if you inherited artwork from a parent or grandparent and simply put it into a climate-controlled storage space right away, you may have no idea what value a piece has.
The same is true for any antiques you have in storage. Perhaps you put things into the unit after you cleaned out a relative’s house or apartment, and while you know the antiques have sentimental value, you’re not sure what the monetary value could be. In order to be worth anything, the antiques need to be in their original condition to fetch a fair price. Normal wear and tear is fine, and often the older an antique is, the better. If the piece has been repaired or altered in any way, its value can quickly diminish.
Sort Through Your Belongings
Everyone, at some point, wishes to find that one piece in their attic or basement that’s worth a million dollars. While this is a fairly unlikely scenario, that doesn’t mean you don’t have some valuable items among your possessions. If you already have a self-storage unit, why not take a weekend and go through your belongings to see what could be worth some money? If you’re cleaning out the attic or basement and want to put some valuable items into storage so that they’re protected until you decide to sell them, our team can help.
At EZ Storage®, we have both standard and climate-controlled units, so you can choose the best option based on your needs. If you’re worried about heat and humidity affecting your comic books, artwork, or antiques, then a climate-controlled space is the way to go. Each of our Detroit-area locations can provide the ideal unit for all of your belongings.
We look forward to seeing you soon!
