Turning Your Attic into Usable Space

Empty attic with text "turning your attic into usable space"

If your family is growing and you need more living space, or you’re remodeling your home and you want to create that perfect study or office, then the attic is a great place to start. While it’s currently a dark, dusty space where you store those boxes of extra belongings and family mementoes, it can be transformed into a usable space where you can read, play, or sleep. At EZ Storage® in Pittsburgh, we can help you find a suitable self-storage unit for all those things that you need to move out of the attic, so that you can get started on your remodeling project!

Clear Everything Out

Before you begin putting up drywall and picking out paint colors for the attic, you’ll want to measure the space so that you can see what you have to work with. It can be difficult to measure around and across all of the boxes and crates that are stored there, so you’ll want to start by clearing everything out. You can take everything downstairs and sort it for storage, or you can rent a unit from us and move everything in right away. Either way, you’ll have an empty attic that you can measure and then get to work on!

How Will You Access the Space?

dreamstime_xxl_25308376In many homes, the attic is somewhat hard to access, and the only way to get up there is by bringing in a ladder or by pulling down a set of collapsible stairs. As you think about turning the space into extra living or sleeping space, be sure to think about how you will access the space. Are you going to build a set of dedicated stairs, or will you leave the pull-down stairs where they are? Who is going to use the space most often – you or your kids? Deciding how the space will be accessed can inform your decisions on where to put up new drywall and how to finish the floors.

Light and Ventilation

The two things your attic may need more than anything are more light and more ventilation. You’ll want the space to be comfortable, but if it’s dark and cold in the winter, and dark and hot in the summer, you’ll want to add windows (or enlarge the ones that are there), and update the space’s HVAC layout. Temperature control will also be better after you insulate the space, and with more light and improve airflow, you’ll love spending lots of time in your new attic.

What Will Your Attic Become?

You may need another bedroom so that your teenage son or daughter can move up there to make room for your younger child who wants to move into a bigger bedroom on the first floor. The kids may need a new playroom, and you want to add a comfy couch and a big screen TV to the space.

Whatever your plan is, we can help you find the perfect self-storage option for those belongings that you need to move out of the attic. You may have antique furniture or boxes of photo albums up there, and regardless of how much stuff you have, we can provide the ideal unit.
