When you’re considering renting a self-storage unit, you first think about what you can put in the space. You may have boxes and tubs in the garage or basement that are prime candidates for storage, and at EZ Storage® in Pittsburgh, we can help you find the ideal unit for your belongings. However, it’s important to think about what you’ll need to get out of your storage unit, especially if you plan to rent for the entire year. Things like camping supplies and holiday decorations should be easily accessible, and you’ll want to make sure that you don’t have to move a ton of stuff to get to the box you need. In this post, we’ll look at some easy ways to get what you need out of your storage space when you want!
Choose the Appropriate Boxes
If you’re going to put your summer wardrobe or your holiday decorations into multiple boxes, then it can be a good idea to use the same size of boxes. This will make the boxes easier to stack, and you can separate that specific size for a certain corner of your unit. Keep in mind that if you’re going to be storing heavy items, you’ll want reinforced boxes that won’t break or fall open when you pick them up.
Label Everything
Labeling is perhaps the most important part of self-storage, apart from actually organizing the space. You’ll want to write on each box what’s inside, as well what room it came from in the house. You can devise a unique numbering system if you’d like, but make sure you have a separate list somewhere that corresponds to the numbers. This will make it much easier to find exactly what you want when the time comes to pick up a box or tub and take it home.
Put Oft-Used Items Towards the Front
You only put up your holiday decorations once a year, making it perfectly okay to store them towards the middle or back of your unit. However, if you have items such as camping gear or boat gear that you use multiple times each summer, then it’s a good idea to store these items towards the front of your storage space. Instead of having to look through each stack of boxes and tubs every time, you’ll know that the stuff you need is right behind the door. Also, make sure that you leave a path between each stack of boxes so that you can maneuver around everything to get what you need. It can be a smart idea to put your boxes and tubs on pallets so that they’re up off the floor, and you can create a walkway between and around each pallet for easy navigation inside your unit.
Find the Right Storage Unit
Finding the right storage unit is also key in helping you get what you need out of your storage unit. If the space is too small, you may stack things too high, making it more difficult to retrieve the box you need. If the space is too large, you may not create as tight of an organization plan and simply put boxes wherever there is room. At EZ Storage®, we can help you choose the best size for your needs.
