Your Winter Storage Guide
Now that November is here, winter is a little over a month away, and at EZ Storage® in Pittsburgh, we want to make sure you and your family are ready for the season. If you’re looking for an affordable self-storage unit near your home, then visit one of our metro-area locations today. The team at your local storage center can help you find the right space for anything you want to store this winter! In this post, we’ll take a look at some winter storage tips and how you can prepare for the season.
Leaving Things Outside
You loved using your grill and your patio furniture during the summer and fall, but now that snow is on its way, you want to make sure everything is protected for the colder months of the year. It is possible to leave some things outside, but only if you have the proper coverings for them. Your grill, for example, should be protected by a cover that’s made for it. Anything else, such as a tarp or blanket, could easily blow off when those winter winds start to blow. As for your patio furniture, the same holds true — covers that are made to fit your chairs and table are often the best choice, since they’re designed to stay in place.
If you don’t want to leave things outside for the winter, then consider renting a nearby storage space. You can easily move your outdoor furniture and portable grill (sans propane tank) into the unit and keep everything safe for the winter.
Rotate Your Holiday Decorations
You’ve likely taken down your Halloween decorations, and you may already have your Thanksgiving and other autumnal decor ready to go. If you have limited space in the house for storing the decorations you’re not using, then consider rotating them each year. You can put the boxes of Halloween decorations where the Thanksgiving decorations were in the garage or the guest bedroom closet, and then do the same once the December holidays roll around. You can also put some things into your storage unit and keep them safe until you need them next year!
Outdoor Apparel and Equipment
Once winter arrives, you’re going to need those heavy coats and other apparel close at hand. You want everyone to be warm when they go outside, but winter coats can take up a lot of space in your closets. By going through everything and deciding what you really need for the season, you can put everything else into storage until you can donate it or sell it.
As for winter sports equipment and other outdoor items, do you really need to keep your skis and snowboards in the garage? While you may want to have quick access to them, if you’re only hitting the slopes a handful of times this year, then it can make more sense to put them in storage and retrieve them when you need them. We offer convenient access hours on every day of the week, so you won’t have to worry about not being able to get into your unit.
Make a Plan
No matter what you’re going to store this winter, it’s good to have a plan. Make a list of what you’d like to store, what you need to store, and how long everything will be in storage. If you have holiday decorations that you haven’t used in years, then put those boxes into storage this year. If you don’t have the proper covers for your patio furniture, then move everything into your unit and keep it protected from snow and wind.
At EZ Storage®, we love helping people find the perfect self-storage unit for winter. With three Pittsburgh locations, we can provide you with a space that fits your needs and your budget.
