Helping Provide Beds for Kids
At EZ Storage®, we love being a part of the greater Philadelphia community, and beyond providing exceptional self-storage solutions, we are always looking for ways to give back. There are plenty of organizations out there that help families who need food, shelter, and clothing, and all of them are worth investing in so that people can feel safe and secure. However, one problem that is still prevalent is thousands of children having a bedroom, but no bed on which to sleep.
Beds for Kids Program
At our location on Red Lion Road in Huntingdon Valley, resident managers Paul and Marsha Benjamin have partnered with OHAAT, whose “Beds for Kids” program was started to provide beds for children who didn’t have a suitable mattress, or any mattress at all. The program provides a Tempur-Pedic® mattress, a bed frame, a pillow, blankets, and a sheet set. A housing program may have helped the family find a place for themselves and their children, but OHAAT ensures that each child has a place to lay his or her head each night. The kit also includes books, a toothbrush, and stuffed animals so that the child can establish a bedtime routine that encourages them to get the sleep they need in order to stay healthy and happy. In 2017, the Beds for Kids program served 1,165 children, and in 2018, they’ve helped 156 so far to date.
Transporting the Beds
Getting the beds from the store to the childrens’ bedrooms requires large trucks, and as we know, it’s not always cost-effective to maintain a fleet of trucks, especially for a non-profit. At EZ Storage®, we try to do our part by donating the use of our moving truck to the organization. This means that more beds can be taken to more kids in less time, which results in fewer children going to sleep each night without a comfortable mattress. As OHAAT works to end child bedlessness in the greater Philadelphia area, we’re happy to know that we’ve been able to make a small difference in a child’s life.
